Saturday, 9th August: Community Orchard Picnic
From Steeple Aston Community Orchard Group:
You are invited to come to a picnic in the Community Orchard on Water Lane!
It will take place on Saturday, 9th August from 1.00pm to 3.00pm.
Bring children and lunch! Soft drinks and cake will be on sale.
Sunday, 17th August: Allotments Open Day
Thursday, 21st August: Talk on William the Conqueror
Bank Holiday Monday, 25th August: Summer Show
Show Secretary Vicky Clifton writes:
Before you know it, the school summer holidays will be coming to an end…. Hopefully we’ll be looking back on a lovely sunny, but not drought growing season or hosepipe bans meaning no paddling pools for the children. But… that also means it’s time to think about your entries for the show.
It’s open to everyone…. any age… any ability, to have a go at something. Baking, craft, photography, growing sunflowers and more.
This year sees a change! A new challenge! And your chance to create something that will last more than a Bank Holiday weekend. We’ve added two special classes.
- Photo for the new SAVH 2026 Calender, FRONT COVER no less.
- Design a logo for our society. This is open to both children and adults. For 133 years
we’ve lacked a brand so now’s the time. It needs to incorporate what we do, what we
promote and our heritage as a society of both Steeple Aston and Middle Aston.
There will be a public choice award for these classes and the official winner, voted for by the committee following the show.
More details of these two classes, along with the other classes to enter can be found in our Show Schedule or pick up a paper copy from the village shop from July.
If you need any help with your entry forms or have questions about an exhibit, it’s my role to help you, so please do get in touch. vmcstedman@btinternet.com or 07817025948.
But wait, there is more….. The fun dog show will be hosted by the Dogs for Good charity. They have added a new class this year so perhaps some practice may be worthwhile… Musical Sit (think musical chairs) or perhaps waggiest tail is your pooches thing. All winning dogs leave with a bright red rosette so what isn’t to love.
And if you weren’t already brimming over with excitement, there is all the fun on the field to look forward to. Bouncy castles, raffles, trade stalls, Ice creams, and games galore. This is predominantly cash only so please come prepared.
Monday, 1st September: Choral Society’s 1st rehearsal
COME AND SING WITH US!
Steeple Aston Choral Society’s next concert is on Sunday 23rd November. We will sing Rossini’s ‘Petite Messe Solennelle’. Margaret B says: ‘The Rossini is not petite – it’s a full-length work – and not solemn. It is a gloriously melodic work.’
It is written for choir with four soloists plus piano and harmonium.
There are various versions online, one is here:

Sunday, 7th & Saturday, 20th September: Apple Picking & Pressing
Saturday, 6th September: Charity coffee morning
Tuesday, 16th September: Community Land Trust AGM
Thursday, 18th September: Steeple Talk
Wednesday, 24th September: Horticultural Society AGM
Steeple Aston and Middle Aston Horticultural Society’s AGM will be on Wednesday, 24th September at 7.45pm in the Village Hall committee room. All are welcome. Please note in your diary, we want your feedback but we’d love your support.
We always need people with ideas for classes, offers to write a quiz in the spring, propagate some bits for a plant stall, or help with the washing up. Your involvement can be as a committee member throughout the year or just on show days. We will be discussing, among other things, a draft constitution. If you would like to look at this before the meeting, you can do so here. If you have any queries or comments, the Society’s contact details are below.
Spring Show 2026 – Plant stall
At this year’s Spring Show we had a plant stall that was extremely successful and most people left with a bargain or three. We want to host the stall again next year, but are asking for your help now please. If you are taking cuttings over the next few months, please consider doing a couple extra for us, or if you have more seedlings than you need, please pot them on, someone will love them.
