Steeple Aston Youth Club

Steeple Aston Youth Club

Steeple Aston Youth Club meets once a week during school term time, on Thursday evenings, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. It is usually held in the Sports and Recreation Centre, next to the Village Hall. It is a thriving club, attracting up to 35 youngsters of secondary school age per session.

The club re-opened in September 2004 and is run by an organising committee largely made up of parents. There are around ten volunteers who work in rotation to supervise the youngsters at each session. The club is always supervised by at least three adults.

The club has the following to offer:

  • it has its own tuck shop.
  • it is a great place to meet and chat.
  • there are opportunities to play table tennis, table football, snooker and other games such as giant chess and indoor skittles. In the summer time outside games may be organised, such as Softball.
  • there are monthly fun games and sports sessions with the A Team from Active Ten-20, a local organisation supporting youth activities throughout Oxfordshire. In summer these sessions are in the village and in winter they are in the Active Ten-20 Centre at Upper Heyford.

The club has just been given money by the Youth Opportunities Fund and additional equipment and activities are being planned.

The club charges £1 a session. For further information please contact Simon, Deborah or Anne.

And finally………… Club Rules

Just a reminder that anyone found breaking any of the club rules, whether it occurs inside or outside of the youth club building, may be asked to leave the session and a phone call will be made to inform your parent(s)/guardian(s) of what has gone on. We ask you all to respect the rules, your peers, any visitors and the ‘sainted’ volunteers at all times.

News from the Youth Club - November 2011

All the young dudes!

The Youth Club continues to flourish and now there are more than 20 participants aged 11 - 15 who meet regularly every Thursday evening at the Sport and Recreation building.

Indoors, the tuck shop is spread with drinks, sweets and chips and you can choose from sessions on the pool table, table tennis, ball games or the Wii. The tuck shop is managed with the help of Chris and Harry who also oversee some of the activities and lend a hand to Debbie Smith who runs the club.

Sweet

On these dark, winter evenings, if weather permits, the Village Hall car park is floodlit for football practice and bike riding. On some evenings, Youth Clubbers can take advantage of the expertise of Fr. Mark Clavier who coaches American football.

And if you feel like taking time out, well there are always the cushions in the corner...

News from the Youth Club - March 2011

Fun at Youth Club!

The Youth Club succeeded in winning a grant of £2,600 from the Oxfordshire Association for Young People (OAYP) which had to be spent between March 2010 and March 2011. And they’ve certainly made the most of it.

The purchase of a floodlight means that Youth Club members can now make maximum use of the Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) and play sport year round, even on dark evenings through the winter. Other new equipment includes dodge balls, footballs and basketballs, giant exercise balls, a new Pool table, Wii games and beanbags.

Inside the Sport and Recreation Building, the Youth Club now have their own deep fat fryer so freshly fried chips are now part of the tuck shop. A new cupboard has also been installed where the Club can keep safely store all their equipment.

The grant has also been spent on outings for the group such as rock climbing at Oxford Brookes University and a day out at Cornbury Festival.

Some members have also had some significant achievements: some were part of a team which successfully obtained a grant to OAYP for a mini bus. Four members also sat on an OAYP panel which had the responsibility of allocating funds to young people’s groups.

Fun at Youth Club!

Another innovation has been the recruitment of new helpers to the Youth Club. Older young people who are working towards their Duke of Edinburgh awards are helping by providing support and leadership for younger members.

As the evenings lengthen towards the summer, the Youth Club invites all members of Year 6 to come along on Thursday evenings any time from 7.30 – 9.30pm to try out the Club and find out all that it has to offer.

Steeple Aston Youth Club - A Report from the members

Fun at Youth Club!

There are about 30 members who go to youth club. From all ages, and all years! You can join from the age of 13 until the age of 17. There is always lots of food, and in the summer there are lots of trips out, like canoeing. People from all over the local villages attend.

Food!

We have recently got a huge bean bag which we have taken to squashing people under. It is really fun. Unless you are the person being squashed!!

More fun!

We also like having bean bag wars with the small bean bags. Which always seems to end in tears

We have a computer!

We have got a ping pong table and a snooker table which are regularly used. We also have a new sofa which we use to put on Tom Thatcher who squeals out for help! He also takes a lot of pictures with the cameras.
