Free hospital transport

Free transport to the Horton, John Radcliffe and Churchill Hospitals is available for some patients who don’t have their own transport, and where there is no public transport available.

The scheme is administered by the Patient Contact Centre for the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Trust. Patients can phone them to book transport if they need to. Booking must be done 48 hours in advance.

They will ask the patient about available buses andownership of private car. If neither are available, they will ask ‘a few questions’ about the patient’s mobility. If the need is confirmed, they offer a free ambulance service to any of the hospitals, or a free car service driven by volunteer drivers depending on needs and mobility.

The number for the Patient Contact Centre is 0845 330 8888, or you can email for second and subsequent appointments on orh.appointments@orh.nhs.uk.

There is also a Department of Health scheme which entitles a patient on specific benefits to reclaim all or part of the cost of getting to and from hospital if they are not eligible for non-emergency ambulance transport. For further information, telephone 01865 221602.
